Our message to our senators is simple. Your vote to support a filibuster will NOT cost you an election. Any other vote absolutely will. Respect the will of the people and you will have the most mobilized and committed activists in the country to contribute and work tirelessly for your behalf. Oppose the will of the people and we will raise challengers to you in your own primaries and contribute every dime we have to them to defeat you, and failing that we will look to find ANY other candidate in the general election to support. Listen to the people or your political career will be the REAL done deal. EMPHASIZE that you are a constituent (IF you are) and provide contact information to prove it.

If you have Republican senators, it is just as important to contact them with the additional message of how outraged you will be if they try to pull some nuclear option stunt.

6 Months In Jail For War Protest

One of the so-called "St. Pat's 4" received a 6 month prison sentence for a war protest in a recruitment office where he and the others poured their own blood. Check the story here, from Common Dreams. The US Attorney who wanted the maximum sentence had a few choice things to say about Daniel Burns' actions:

Assistant U.S. Attorney Miroslav Lovric had urged that Burns get the maximum sentence. He said Burns and the other three protesters had no respect for the law. He said Burns, Clare Grady and Teresa Grady violated American law when they went to Cuba last month to protest the government's holding of detainees at the U.S. Naval station at Guantanamo Bay.

Lovric said the trio did not get permission to travel to Cuba — a legal requirement — and that the U.S. State Department is investigating their visit.

"It's not a major, major crime," Lovric said. "It's the attitude: 'We can do anything we want as long as it justifies our goals.' "

Will this brave, brave US Attorney Lovshitz speak those same words against Bush? No respect for the law? Can do anything he wants as long as it justifies his goals? No, that doesn't sound like the Bush administration at all...

50 Most Loathsome Americans

The BuffaloBeast website has compiled a hilarious collection of the 50 most loathsome Americans, a rap sheet against them, and a fittingly just punishment wish. Here are a couple samples of the offender and their sentence:

48. Larry the Cable Guy

Sentence: Sent back in time for the sole purpose of having Mark Twain’s cigars extinguished on his face.

38. Mr. Blackwell

Sentence: Teeth extracted with pliers and used to bedazzle Britney Spears’s jean jacket.

36. John Rendon

Sentence: Paid handsomely to saturate the global media with fabricated reports that the cure for cancer is “punching John Rendon in the throat.”

27. Ann Coulter

Charges: The fact that Coulter is considered desirable by Republicans belies their sick and masochistic nature. We saw Coulter in person this year, and she is a revolting skeleton with a boob job and a grotesquely oversized head, who feeds only on the hatred of her target audience, liberals. Only redeeming quality is that she is impossible to take seriously--really more of a shock comic than a political commentator, whether she knows it or not.

Exhibit A: “I’m getting a little fed up with hearing about, oh, civilian casualties.”

Sentence: Confined to Mississippi, forever banned from interacting with the lefty intellectuals she lives to antagonize.

13. God

Charges: If your answer to the age-old question of God’s existence is “yes,” your next question should be, “Why is he such a dick?” After three major natural disasters, not to mention the eternal constants of famine, war and disease, to believe in God is to believe either that He enjoys fucking with us, or at best has totally lost interest in the whole “people” thing. Never calls anymore.

Exhibit A: Mosquitoes, Ralph Reed.

Sentence: Forever listening to an unending stream of idiotic, mundane prayers uttered by the dumbest, most inarticulate people in His creation.
Civil War In Iraq

"Civil War" has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Makes you think of History, and of righting traditional wrongs, heroes and so on. Maybe a better term would be "mass executions, genocide, unmarked graves, rapes, torture and atrocities." Robert Dreyfuss writes on how the recent elections in Iraq are all but a recipe for full-scale civil war, on TomPaine.org. Here is a paragraph 3/4s into it that I really liked:

"...That’s the ersatz constitution, you will recall, that passed in a referendum on Oct. 15, despite the fact that 50 of its 130 clauses hadn’t yet been finished, despite the fact that copies of the document weren’t printed and circulated to the population that was voting, despite the fact that it was written in secret (under U.S. supervision) by the Shiite-Kurd majority over the objections of the token Sunnis in the room. The Sunni community was tricked into voting on Oct. 15 and then Dec. 15 by promises that the constitution’s bad provisions could be amended. Now, SCIRI says: No such luck."

And towards the end, here is an ominous sign:

"...So what’s left is an increasingly Iran-leading, Shiite fundamentalist theocracy with a rump Kurdish republic attached to it. And you can put this in your signs-of-things-to-come file: Muqtada Sadr, the cherubic (and Rubenesque) militant young cleric, said on Sunday that the Mahdi Army, which is now a big part of the Iraqi government to be, says that his forces will fight alongside Iran’s if Iran is attacked by the United States over its nuclear program."
